The Dower House is recognized as the oldest home in West Chester, Pennsylvania. The property’s history dates back to a 5,000-acre lot originally acquired from William Penn by Richard Thomas. In 1715, John and Mary Wall purchased 150 acres of this land from Richard Thomas's son, establishing the site where Dower House still stands today.
The West Chester Public Library has provided services to area residents since 1872. It currently has a collection of 50,000 items and receives 110,000 visits every year.
West Chester has a variety of places to visit, including restaurants, shops, parks, and historical sites. Some popular attractions include the Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center, the Chester County History Center, the American Helicopter Museum, the West Chester Railroad, and QVC studio tours. The Brandywine Battlefield Park is a 52-acre park that was the center of George Washington’s continental encampment. The Battle of Brandywine was the largest single day engagement of the American Revolution where nearly 30,000 soldiers squared off on a ten square mile area of roughly 35,000 acres. Today’s battlefield landscape encompasses nearly fifteen different municipalities with the main gateway of interpretation being our park.
